Election Fever continues following Leaders’ Debate
With less than a month until Malta goes to the polls, political events on campus are in full swing. Following last week’s leaders’ debate, organised by Insite, a number of other minor debates have been scheduled, as well as manifesto discussions by political organisations SDM and Pulse.
Last Wednesday’s debate between the three party leaders at Sir Temi Zammit Hall on campus touched upon civil rights, stipends, research funding, pensions and job creation. Despite a number of student complaints regarding the event, it was described in local media as being lively yet civil. [Watch here]
This week’s round of political discussions on campus kicks off with SDM’s ‘Electoral Programme Conference’. Karl Gouder [PN], Owen Bonnici [PL] and Mario Mallia [AD] will speak at the event, which will be moderated by Peppi Azzopardi of Xarabank fame.
A similar event, ‘Manifestos under the lens’ is being held by Pulse on Friday.
Owen Bonnici and Mario Mallia are expected to return to campus on Thursday along with PN candidate Clyde Puli, for a debate between education spokespersons – this time organised by KSU. Deputy leaders Simon Busuttil [PN], Louis Grech [PL] and Carmel Cacopardo [AD] are scheduled to debate the following week, at an event also hosted by the council. Both debates will be held in the common room.
Earlier today, SDM also announced that it will be hosting a debate between independent candidates John Zammit, Tonio Mercieca and Nazzareno Bonnici on Friday – at the same time as Pulse’s event.
Insite will be covering all five events live – stay tuned for updates.
