KSU ELECTIONS LIVE UPDATES
23.43: Things quickly quieten down though.
Goodnight ladies and gentlemen, and thank you for following us.
23.42: Chants of SDM in the Quad.
Congratulations to both teams for their work
23.40: Lucianne Caruana, in a comment, said that she would like to thank the two groups for all their cooperation, the registrar and all university staff, precincts office, estate and works, and last but not least all members of the electoral commission for their dedication and professionality
23.38: Block votes
MI 356
SDM 1261
MIXED 167
DUBIOUS 52
TOTAL 1836
Once dubious votes were clarified 46 were found to be invalid and 6 were mixed
POSTS
Social Policy Coordinator
Matthew Bonett – 1337
Mark Camilleri – 425
Invalid – 74
Sec Gen
Karl Agius – 1345
Robert L.Fenech – 407
Invalid – 84
President
Carl Grech – 1332
Andre Vella – 429
Invalid – 80
23.34: Wrapping up. Results soon.
23.18: Karl Agius and Matthew Bonett, who were outside, are asked to enter the Common Room. The rest of the candidates are already inside.
23.13: In the final processes. Soon soon
22.43: Counting of votes continues
22.13: Actual counting process about to start. Votes will be divided into ‘SDM’, ‘MI’, ‘Mixed’ and ‘Dubious’
Any form of mark in the box near the candidate’s name is accepted. Anything depreciative written near a candidate’s name renders that particular vote as ‘dubious’; anything depreciative written on the paper renders the whole vote ‘dubious’.
We have been asked to leave the Common Room. The candidates have also been asked to leave the room.
Any member from both teams has the right to object to any vote.
22.08: Three votes not found (it is possible that the voter walked out with the vote). However, both teams agree that the counting should start. Otherwise, all other votes were accounted for.
22.10: It seems that votes from UoM-1 were put by mistake in the box UoM-2. (Votes from different boxes have different stamps. That is how the mistake was figured out.)
21.54: UOM-1 votes did not match. Official figure is 651 votes. Re-counting.
21.51: Checking that all votes are in batches of 50
21.43: Total votes:
JC-02 – 142/1250
JC-01 – 340/1300
IHC - 70/1512
Bighi – 3/21
21.36: Third interesting vote of the night – with the words “Komplu ghodd a l***. Dan ghalik Mario Frendo (Sec Gen of SDMJC) a faxxist.”
21.35: Second interesting vote of the night – with the words “KSU tirbhu imma KSJC inz*****”
21.33: First interesting vote of the night. Description: No vote declared on the official boxes. On the other side of the paper, box drawn and ticked under the word ‘Pulse’
There are 8 people counting the votes on 4 different tables. Each table is sorting the votes from a different box.
21.30: Bighi box sorted. JC-02 box being opened
For those of you not familiar with the voting process, currently boxes being opened are first checked to make sure they are sealed and then opened. Once opened, votes are being separated into batches of 50 votes (face down) by each of the counters.
21.21: Third box – Gozo being opened = Empty. Moving on to Bighi instead.
21.19: Third box – JC being opened
21.17: Second box – UOM2 being opened
21.15: First box of UOM1 being opened.
21.13: SDM & MI candidates and representatives enter – 5 from each team
21.03: Waiting for boxes to be opened. Can you feel the suspense?
20.46: Nothing much going on. Scratch that. Nothing going on right now. For those of you outside refreshing constantly and putting up our hit counter, thank you.
20.36: UOM1 - 651
UOM2 – 635
Total – 1286
(UOM1 & UOM2 are how the voting booths were divided based on faculty i.e. all students voted in UOM1 or UOM2 depending on which faculty they belonged to.)
20.25: SDM members are waiting outside in the Quad. There doesn’t seem to be any of the Moviment Indipendenti candidates present.
20.20: Voting monitors have just exited
20.08: Gigi the student house cat is on security patrol. Constant vigilance.
20.01: Here’s what is going to happen: Voting booths have closed. There will now be the reconciliation of votes (checking how many eligible voters there are, how many actually voted, checking the signatures of those who voted).
After this the signatures of those who voted are double-checked. Then the room will be prepared for the counting process. Seven members of the electoral commission will be counting, and five counting agents from each team can stay in the room.
The candidate can enter while his votes are being counted.
19.36: Hmmm: Till 14.00, no one from the Gozitan Campus had voted. Aa yes, such a strong interest in the KSU elections
KSU Elections were held today, with polling booths open from 08.00 till 20.00.
The elections were contested by Carl Grech, Karl Agius and Matthew Bonett from SDM and Andre Vella, Robert Fenech and Mark Camilleri from Moviment Indipendenti. They are contesting for the roles of President, Sec Gen and KPS Social Policy Coordinator respectively.
Voting booths were set up at the University of Malta, Junior College, Institute of Health Care, Bighi and the Gozo Campus.
By 14.00 1296 out of the 12,983 eligible students had voted. This means that a mere 9.98% of eligible students had cast their votes.

L-ewwel haga din mhiex rebha, Ghalxejn partitarji mil-SDM qeghdin jifirhu, meta jkollok turnout daqshekk baxx, nibda nissuspetta li there were forced votes. It-tieni haga KSU, is-sena id-diehla ha jirraprezenta il-maggoranza tal-Percentagg ie, dak li ma vvutawx, jew dak ta\’ gewwa (tal-flok u l-lanyard)!!
Prosit Lil Moviment Indipendenti, li ghalkemm b\’mod daqxejn eccentriku, imma hadtu decizzjoni biex taghtu sfida lil SDM.
SDM F\’KSU, mhux ghalik, jekk mintiex liebes flokk BLUE!!

I would like to take this opportunity and all those 23.3% who voted for me in the elections, especially considering that I managed to get more mixed votes than my opponent!
Thank you very much!

With roughly a thousand less votes than last year, SDM in KSU should be applauded for increasing the already ghastly student interest in KSU affairs during the past year by strictly surrounding itself with its collaborators in almost all its ventures, the only commendable exponents in the 09/10 line-up in my opinion having been its education commissioner and KPS commissioner and coordinator.
That said, let\’s just hope that this time round KSU will wake up to d reality that students have a brain to think with and d ability to perceive what true interest in their necessities feels like. Till then, KSU will be nothing more than KS-BOO for yet another year.
