Pulse Accuse SDM of Homophobia

Following several comments treating Insite’s coverage of the SDM vs PULSE carcades, social democrat students PULSE have released a statement of clarification accusing Christian democrats SDM of homophobia.

In the video, PULSE President Glenn Micallef speaks to supporters of his organisation outside Junior College, angrily condemning an episode in which SDM activists manipulated the PULSE logo to read “Pufti” (a homophobic slur) and posted it on Facebook under the profile “Pulse Hara” (“Pulse are Shit”)

The PULSE president insisted that his comments, which featured in last week’s PULSEJC meeting, were not made with offensive intent. On the contrary, Mr. Micallef further stated that “The speech was simply highlighting an episode in which SDM members manipulated and edited the Pulse logo with the intention of insulting and denigrating their rival organisation.”

As proof of his claims, Mr. Micallef showed Insiter Online a screen shot of a Facebook profile displaying a spoofed version of the PULSE logo, reading the word “pufti”. The screenshot also shows popular SDM activist Gayle Lynn Callus listed as a Facebook friend.

Glenn Micallef additionally condemned the use of such language also emphasizing that “Pulse consider as purely ignorant not only the manipulation of the organization’s logo, but worse than that, the use of such words with the purpose of defamation or insult. Homophobic comments and acts were always condemned by Pulse.”

In reply, SDM Vice-President Andrew Aquilina expressed his disappointment with Pulse’s statements claiming that the issue has already been dealt with. The SDM official dismissed Pulse’s reaction as “pitiful” relating to the upcoming Junior College elections. With regards homophobia, Mr. Aquilina trusts in the maturity of the general public considering the ambiguity of certain vulgarities, once again regarding Pulse’s opportunistic approach as disrespectful.

The Christian democrats also commented: “taking into consideration that an Election is around the corner and instead of discussing factual student matters that help students and their environment, they are resorting to such measures. This clearly shows that ‘pulse’ are trying to win students over by brainwashing them against SDM.”

Pulse l-ewwel jibku ghax ghajjruhom “Pufti” imbaghad ghax “Foxx l-SDM” (isimghu il-vidjow) allura ma gara xjn … u lee

  2. Jimmy says:

David, you missed the whole point. Pulse is simply condemning the manipulation of their logo and are not crying because an uncivilized individual called them “Pufti!. The former is a cowardly act which is normally punished by law.

Eventually SDM refuse to condemn this type of behaviour amongst its members.

BTW, Haven’t you heard SDM members screaming “FOXX IL-PULSE”? I think it’s better to watch the video again.

  3. Gayle Lynn Callus says:

Just to clear a few points with regards to this article.

I have nothing to do with this act and I dissociate myself in anyway from this incident. The person behind this incident was already condemned and spoken to by SDM.

On the other hand I do not feel that adding this profile as a Friend is in any way wrong.

Let’s Hope that neither parties involved need to resort to any violence and any use of vulgar language. Supposedly both organisations are there to represent the Students! So let’s hope that this does not resort into a war between pulse and sdm.

  4. Chris Bartolo says:

Mr. Aquilina, just have a quick look at your Facebook group and see which supporters are “brainwashed”. I honestly had to leave the group because I couldn’t stand people arguing that all PULSE did was bad or only in a way to gain votes.

Honestly I really don’t care and I’m not voting in the upcoming election but trust me you just lost a couple of votes through the bias of certain SDM members.

  5. Student004 says:

Credibility = you warn the member and then you choose him to represent your organisation as a candidate

  6. Gabb says:

Student Organization Pulse works for the students, truly. Instead of even trying to do the same, SDM criticizes the work done and uses bad language which put me off in the first place.
    JC student.
