Segway or the Highway

Segway: (trademark) a self-balancing personal transportation device with two wheels; can operate in any level pedestrian environment.

Us Maltese folk have been known to be the kind of people to complain until we’re blue in the face, but not take action. The current morning traffic situation can be described as suicidal at best, and the traffic jams around Malta mean more hours of sleep are sacrificed to get to work on time, more fuel is consumed in the choc-a-block traffic, and consequently, more of our precious environment is damaged. Kyle Calleja, however, has decided to try and find a solution to all of this, where for a whole week he will travel to and from university on a Segway, as opposed to the usual four-wheeled method.

During this week I will see whether or not it is actually viable to invest in some other forms of transportation during the busy times of the day. I will keep a report on expenditure which I (hopefully) reduce and the time I save, or don’t save. I will comment on the pros and cons which I experience first hand during this week.”

Segways are recently gaining popularity, as when it was first unveiled on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” the machine was described as “the world’s first self-balancing human transporter.” The fact that it is chargeable and does not work on fuel means that it does not harm the environment. Kyle Calleja goes on to say; “My aim is to hopefully achieve results which render alternative transportation not to replace cars but to reduce the usage of cars where possible and look forward to a more efficient and sustainable future.”

Let’s see what the results will be. Until then, we’ll wait for the red light to turn “green”.

InsiterOnline.Com will be meeting Kyle Calleja next week;

    Though obviously this is a very good initiative, and one which I truly applaud, segways do actually harm the environment – to charge it, one needs an good amount of electricity, thus it still ultimately uses fossil fuels and affects the general environment. But, yeah, it’s a good start for a university that is obsessed cars.

  2. Chris Fenech says:

    How many kilometers will Kyle have to travel with his segway?

  3. Simoncelli says:

    or don’t look like a dork and get a motorcycle?

  4. Grazia says:

    Bicycles, bicycles, bicycles.
