Youth Local Council Scheme Gaining Popularity.
240 Maltese youths across 25 local councils are participating in the 4th edition of the Youth Local Council Programme.
The programme is being coordinated by the National Youth Counsil in collaboration with Aġenzija Żgħażagħ and is aimed at ‘youth empowerment’
Agency coordinator Ms Miriam Teuma told Insiteronline
“The youth local counsil programme gives youths the tools to contribute to society, and become active members of their local community.”
“ The Youth local council programme has achieved growing popularity amongst maltese youths… what started off as 15 counsils with 136 particpiants in 2009 has almost doubled “ Parliamentary Secretary for Youth and Sport Hon. Clyde Puli said this morning during a visit to a series of seminars being held for the participants in the programme.
The Parliamentary Secretary went on to add that passing on leadership skills as well as business and finance planning are the cornerstones of ‘good governance’ and must remain the main focus of such ‘hands-on’ projects.
Budding counsilers, assisted by youth workers, draft proposals aimed at bettering their local community, of which 3 winning proposals will be implemented at the end of the programme.
“There are things that need to be changed and I’m not about to sit back and do nothing about it. I want to get things rolling myself, I think thats what this whole thing is about.” One enthusiastic participant told insiteronline
